Manuka – Leptospermum scoparium
Origin: Aotearoa, New Zealand
Part used: Leaves and flowers
Manuka, often confused with Tea Tree or Kanuka, is a ubiquitous shrub-type tree native to Aotearoa New Zealand. The mature hardwood is dense and resinous and is often used for carving, smoking foods and the cultivation of Manuka honey from flower pollination – prized for its flavour and therapeutic properties. It is well known for its use in reducing respiratory congestion and support of healthy skin.
Often confused with:
An effective anti-fungal for treating respiratory conditions and supporting the immune system. Sweeter aroma.
A versatile anti-septic and anti-viral for treating skin infections and purifying air. Sharper aroma.
Pre-European Māori have long revered Manuka for its strength and healing abilities. It was and still is, used to treat a range of skin problems including chronic sores, ringworm and eczema. Traditional Māori medicine also cites Manuka for urinary complaints and for reducing fever. Originally, they boiled the leaves in water to inhale for colds, blocked sinuses, hay fever and asthma and rubbed the warm liquid onto stiff backs and sore joints.
Fresh, gentle, warm camphor aroma with hints of lemon, earth and honey.
Blends well with: Frankincense, Lavender Spike, Eucalyptus, Fir Balsam and Sandalwood.
